Outlast 2 is a first-person survival horror video game developed and published by Red Barrels for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It is the sequel to the 2013 video game Outlast and released was on April 25, 2017.
Outlast 2 is a first-person survival horror game that is a single-player campaign. It is set in Northern Arizona. The game is also carrying over the found footage characteristics from the first game. The player controls the investigative journalist who investigates a dilapidated rural area in Supai, near the western edge of the Colorado Plateau.
The game features a journalist named Blake Langermann, along with his wife Lynn, roaming the Arizona desert to explore the murder of a pregnant woman, Jane Doe. Blake and Lynn get separated in a helicopter crash, and Blake has to find his wife while traveling through a village inhabited by a sect that believes the end of days are upon them.
After the successful release and development of Outlast, Red Barrels confirmed the development of Outlast 2 on October 23, 2014. It was also reported that the characters and setting would be much different than the first, as players wouldn’t return to Mount Massive in the sequel. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, co-founder Philippe Morin stated that “we really want to keep improving our craft, but ultimately we’ll approach things the same way.”
Reviews:
“Outlast 2 is a terrifying successor to the 2013 original that keeps the scares coming at a relentless pace.” Lucy O’Brien, IGN
“Think of it as a ride through a really amazing haunted house: you don’t have a ton of control and sometimes the ride breaks down for a moment or two, but it’s basically guaranteed to leave you scared out of your mind.” Scott Butterworth, GameSpot
” …a moderately unnerving stealth experience that plunges a fistful of good ideas into a bucket of gore. Outlast 2 is a fairly distinctive creation, even if many of the ingredients are familiar from Silent Hill, F.E.A.R. and the Amnesia series…” Edwin Evans-Thirlwell, Eurogamer
