Plot:

When a child-stealing demon attaches itself to a little girl, her family is thrust into a battle against time in order to save the girl and send the demon back to hell…

Reviews:

“The story is hokey, and the CGI is reprehensible (why is it everyone who’s possessed lately has blacked-out eyes and a widening mouth)? There’s may be one or two moderate jump scares (could be more, I was almost falling asleep), and the conclusion is lackluster in a kind and giving sense.” Dread Central

the-chosen-2015-fragman_8602334-13050_1200x630

The Chosen features so much crying over fallout from infirm grandparents, drug addiction, unplanned pregnancies, and untimely infanticide that its style fits better as family drama than as suspenseful horror.  There is no big-screen cinematic value in the presentation, though it would work well for a cable TV movie-of-the-week, which The Chosen resembles.” Culture Crypt

Reviews:

This movie is great because it’s exactly what you expect when you see the title Snow Beast. There are no surprises, just an exquisitely cheesy representation of an equally cheesy Bigfoot / Abominable Snowman myth.” Bruce Kooken, HorrorNews.net

images

“The entire production has the sensibilities of a more innocent bygone era of filmmaking as this could very well be the tamest of all of the killer Bigfoot movies to come along in the past decade. Ostensibly a family film that happens to revolve around a hungry homicidal hominid hunting humans, if it weren’t for those minimal moments of bloodshed, Snow Beast would be bordering on G-rated.” Foywonder, Dread Central

snow-beast1

” … the monster was depicted via a guy in a suit, with CGI kept to a shocking minimum (his red eye I think was the only glaring effect). Sure, the script’s lack of action kept it from being used much, but at least those rare kill scenes looked good. And… uh… actually that’s it. The movie was watchable, I guess, but it was just so lackluster and slow-paced…” Horror Movie a Day

Plot:

When a group of BASE jumpers enter into a forbidden portion of the Tasmanian wilderness, they didn’t foresee that one of their group would die in the process. They also didn’t expect for their friend’s blood to awaken ancient and gigantic Tasmanian devils that would swiftly seek to make them their supper.

The group finds some assistance in three park rangers that arrive to arrest the group for trespassing, only to find that they too are in danger of becoming the deadly beasts’ prey. One by one, people start to die…

Reviews:

“There are so many satisfying moments in this movie that it is easy to forget the low budget despite how cheesy everything looks. Everything about the movie that at the outset made me believe it would be just another Syfy crapfest eventually evolved into something great. Not just good or watchable mind you, but genuinely great.” Stupid Blue Planet

409314233_640

“Too silly to take seriously and taking itself far too seriously to have fun with, Tasmanian Devils needn’t bother anybody’s list of monster flicks this year.” John Noonan, HorrorNews.net

“There is little here that you haven’t seen countless times before. Annoying characters you can’t wait to see die: check. A clumsy and unconvincing love interest subplot: check. Incompetent direction and unconvincing special effects: check. It is fair to say Tasmanian Devils does little well but at least the pacing is brisk to help make sure it isn’t completely boring.” Adam Cook, Letterboxd

‘ … no introduction necessary’

American Psycho is a 2000 American-Canadian black comedy psychological thriller-horror film co-written and directed by Mary Harron (The Moth Diaries), based on Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel of the same name.

Producer Edward R. Pressman (Sisters; Phantom of the Paradise; The Hand) purchased the film rights to the novel in 1992. Johnny Depp expressing an interest in the lead role. After discussions with Stuart Gordon and David Cronenberg fell through, Harron was brought on to direct and cast Christian Bale in the lead role.

i'm walking on sunshine

Lionsgate acquired worldwide distribution in 1997 and temporarily replaced Harron and Bale with Oliver Stone as director and Leonardo DiCaprio portraying Patrick Bateman. DiCaprio left in favour of The Beach and Harron and Bale were brought back.

As Harron began production, the crew had to contend with threats of protest, as the issue of violence in the media became crystallised by the Columbine shootings. Campaigns against the film continued throughout production, the Feminist Majority Foundation condemning the film as “misogynist,” and the Canadians Concerned About Violence in Entertainment (C-CAVE) convincing restaurant owners to deny Harron permission to film in their establishments.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) gave the film an NC-17 rating for a sex scene featuring Bateman having a threesome with two prostitutes. The producers excised approximately 18 seconds of footage to obtain an R-rated version of the film.

American Psycho was released theatrically on April 14, 2000. The film received generally positive reviews and was a financial success, with critics mainly praising the screenplay and Christian Bale’s performance.

The film has now achieved cult status, any initial controversy surrounding it giving way to an appreciation of the film’s satirical qualities.

A direct-to-video sequel, American Psycho 2, directed by Morgan J. Freeman and starring Mila Kunis, was released in 2002.

Cast:

Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe (Shadow of the Vampire; Antichrist; Odd Thomas), Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, Justin Theroux, and Reese Witherspoon.

Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker living in Manhattan in the late 1980s. His life revolves around dining at trendy restaurants while keeping up appearances for his fiancée, Evelyn, and for his circle of wealthy and shallow associates, most of whom he dislikes.

Bateman and his associates flaunt their business cards in a display of vanity. Enraged by the superiority of coworker Paul Allen’s card, Bateman murders a homeless man and his dog.

At a Christmas party, Bateman makes plans to have dinner with Paul, with Paul mistaking Bateman for Marcus Halberstram. Bateman gets Paul drunk and lures him back to his apartment and murders him with an axe…

Reviews:

“As brilliantly as the movie’s visual style evokes a world spat out by a Vanity Fair art director, American Psycho remains a one-joke satire of materialism and soullessness.” Stephen Holden, The New York Times

“All of the murders are equally real or unreal, and that isn’t the point: The function of the murders is to make visible the frenzy of the territorial male when his will is frustrated. The movie gives shape and form to road rage, golf course rage, family abuse and some of the scarier behavior patterns of sports fans.” Roger Ebert, RogerEbert.com

American-Psycho-Christian-Bale-2000

” … after an hour of dissecting the ’80s culture of materialism, narcissism and greed, the movie begins to repeat itself. It becomes more grisly and surreal, but not more interesting. Conceptually, this savage cartoon ends up as trapped in surfaces as its shallow antihero: it’s all dressed up with nowhere to go.” David Ansen, Newsweek

“Harron opens wittily by equating bodily fluids with nouvelle cuisine, although nothing that follows is nearly so Swiftian. She effectively burlesques Ellis’s affectless carnage amid a mannequin-parade of product endorsements—itself a provocatively tedious riff on the high Reagan world of Wall Street and Bonfire of the Vanities—but the edge has already been blunted by the funnier, more disturbing Fight Club.” J. Hoberman, Village Voice

american-psycho2

“At its best, the film reflects our own narcissism, and the shallow American culture it was spawned from, with piercing effectiveness. Much of the credit for this can go to director Mary Harron, whose off-kilter tendencies are a good complement to Ellis’ unique style.” Bloody Disgusting

Plot:

Set between the events of Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 3, the story follows online reporter Chase Carter and camerawoman Jordan as they cover the stories of the people inside of the walled-in quarantined area in Oregon, as the government (running an organization called FEZA — Federal Emergency Zombie Authority) attempts to contain a viral outbreak that turns people into ravenous zombies.

An anti-viral drug called Zombrex, that keeps the virus at bay, is being administered to those infected. When it becomes clear that the drug is no longer effective and a zombie outbreak purges the town and infects its inhabitants, Chase, Jordan, grieving mother Maggie , and survivor Crystal battle their way out of the city before it gets firebombed. But Crystal has a dark secret, and the army has a hidden agenda…

Dead Rising Watchtower Movie

Reviews:

Dead Rising: Watchtower is precisely the type of comedic action/horror concoction that it plainly wants to be, but there’s something about the film’s aggressively episodic structure — and 118-minute running time — that makes it feel more like a series of short films that were cut together than a full-bore three-act story.” Scott Weinberg, Nerdist

“Fans may justifiably complain that it’s impossible to invest in one-dimensional characters and cliché government cover-ups, but no one can say it’s not as good as the games. Disposable characters and convoluted conspiracies are as common to the Dead Rising universe as machete shotguns and ludicrous Mad Max-style gangs. For better or worse, Watchtower is exactly the movie the Dead Rising series deserves.” Adam DiLeo, IGN

jpg

… surprisingly very good take on the hit video games of the same name. It’s above average zombie cinema with teeth and it’s worth a shot if you’re in the mood for good apocalyptic entertainment.” Felix Vasquez, Cinema Crazed

“Compounding the uneventful nature of the movie is the simple fact that it’s not very good horror. There’s blood – mostly in obvious CG splashes and the occasional mouthful burped out in actor’s faces – but no real gore. There’s a slightly juicy bisection, and a pretty good decapitation, but that’s it. For a movie with so much inventive hardware being wielded, too little of it ever gets put to use for a memorable kill.” Dan Whitehead, Eurogamer.net

Cover Girl Killer is a 1959 British psycho-thriller film written and directed by Terry Bishop (Model for Murder). It predates films with similar themes such as Night, After Night, After Night (1969), the Italian Strip Nude for Your Killer and Mary Milligan vehicle The Playbirds (1978).

Inspector Brunner (Victor Brooks) is put on the case. Meanwhile, John Mason (Spencer Teakle), the young owner of Wow! decides to conduct his own investigation…

Reviews:

Cover Girl Killer is a great little movie, which actually seems a bit ahead of its time (despite its almost sweet approach to the subject matter), pointing the way to the sex and horror thrillers of the late 60s and 70s. After all, as the killer says: “Surely sex and horror are the new gods in this polluted world of so-called entertainment.” British Horror Films

” … simple and effective crime-drama displays a plot elevating it above standard b-feature fare.” BritMovie.co.uk

“Unfortunately Corbett is about the only thing the film has going for it, with flat direction, generally poor performances and – as might be expected – little real sleaze content except that inherently attaching to its grimy, low-rent milieux.” Giallo Fever

” … notable for anticipating the post-Scream nature of self-reflection, especially with the ingenious sequence involving the hiring of an actor to pose as the killer and the fabrication of a planned film version of the very events we are viewing. Highly recommended for anyone interested in tracing the roots of the stalk-and-slash subgenre, and extremely satisfying viewing in retrospect.” Darrell Buxton, Hysteria Lives

“Fast moving and only slightly creaky, Cover Girl Killer is good value for money. A few too many scenes are allocated to the American hero, but this is counterbalanced by the super laid back pipe puffing investigating detective and by Corbett, effectively playing a dual role as both the psychotic, really creepy Spendoza and his smooth, unnamed ‘real life’ self…” Paul Bareham, Mounds & Circles

Night of the Living Dead: Darkest Dawn – aka Night of the Living Dead: Origins – is a 2014 computer animated 3D horror film directed by Krisztian Majdik and Zebediah De Soto and produced by Simon West (Lara Croft: Tomb RaiderWhen a Stranger Calls [2006]; The Blob [2016]).

The production has been on and off since 2009. An online 2015 Indiegogo campaign to pay for a theatrical release raised a mere $1,225 (1% of target) from twenty-four backers.

The film is a re-telling of Night of the Living Dead (1968) set in modern day New York City rather than 1960s rural Pennsylvania. Both Todd and Moseley would be reprising their roles as Ben and Johnny, respectively, from the 1990 version of the film.

Main cast (voices):

Tony Todd, Danielle Harris, Bill Moseley, R. Madhavan, Joseph Pilato, Sydney Tamia Poitier, Alona Tal, Tom Sizemore.

Sheborg-Massacre-2015-poster

‘The chaos is near’

Sheborg Massacre is a 2015 neo-pulp Australian feature film written, co-produced, edited and directed by Daniel Armstrong (Murderdrome).

Armstrong describes his film thus: “Neo-pulp lovingly embraces the most extreme, cliche, and supercilious elements of pop culture and pulp literature and puts them in a human context.

Sheborg Massacre itself is a 50s teen rebel flick set in a B grade sci-fi world from the early 80s, with horror style violence. It’s not a spoof, it’s not horror, it’s not action, it’s not sci-fi, it’s not drama. It’s all of these things. It’s neo-pulp.”

Plot:

1931: A body is being burnt on a cross, a woman named Regina is at a farm, and attempting to barricade a door, from where beyond, demons try to enter. Her husband George transforms into a demon and kills her…

Sixty years later, after the suicide of his father, a young man named Cory, the grandson of Regina and George, and his girlfriend Elaine, along with a group of their friends, travel up to the farm, where the events took place sixty years before, so that Cory can figure out what happened to his grandparents. They are soon attacked by a band of vicious demons…

Reviews:

“Though existential smatterings are not in this demon’s wind, so we’re left with a middle-of-the-road outing never terribly amusing and not concerned with atmospheric mindgames. Shame really, a little more push either way could have made Demon Wind a minor chestnut gem instead of a crap timewaster.'” Basement of Ghoulish Decadence

“Special effects that look like they were drawn on the film with a crayon along with masses of demonic nonsense, drop a cast into this including some dude wearing a magician outfit and you’re all set.” BadMovies.org

Demon Wind shouldn’t be marked down for plot. Or imagery. Or acting. Or anything for the matter. Accept it for who it tries to be. A fun piece of fromage that won’t be any more or less affected by the number of people in the room watching it.” Oh, the Horror!

Death Smiles at Murder – aka Death Smiles on a Murderer (Italian: La morte ha sorriso all’assassino) – is a 1973 Italian horror film photographed and directed by Aristide Massaccesi [Joe D’Amato] from a screenplay co-written with Claudio Bernabei and Romano Scandariato.

Plot:

1909: A rich couple take in a young girl who was in a horse carriage accident and has amnesia, and both have an affair with her. Meanwhile, Dr. Sturges (Klaus Kinski) uses an ancient Incan formula to raise the dead for his own series of revenge murders…

Death.Smiles.on.a.Murder[(020504)19-45-32]

Languid, yet morbidly compelling, with a delirious amount of close-ups of the actors eyeballs, Massaccesi’s focus on eroticism and necrophilia predates his 1979 ‘nasty’ Beyond the Darkness yet is considerably more arty – which perhaps explains why it remained pretty obscure until the digital age? Despite a baffling plot, the gothic ambiance and stylistic presentation are engaging. Meanwhile, the cast seem to believe in the nightmare scenario, especially Klaus Kinski who is typically manic.

Adrian J Smith, Horrorpedia

Death-Smiles-on-a-Murderer-3

“The plot cuts back and forth and twists and turns in upon itself as if to mimic the many bulging veins in Klaus Kinski’s forehead. Despite its nonsensical story, the film itself is surprisingly inviting. D’Amato pulls off a number of impressive scenes, in particular a montage of flirtation and fornication…” Jason McElreath, DVD Drive-In

Death-Smiles-at-Murder-1973-slab

” … benefits greatly from high quality cinematography (helmed by D’Amato), terrific locations, and a perfect soundtrack by the great and under-appreciated Berto Pisano (Burial Ground, Interrabang), all of which are integrated together to create one of the best looking and sounding gothic horror era pieces that’s the stuff of dreams and nightmares.” At the Mansion of Madness

vlcsnap-2012-10-26-22h36m29s204

“Just when you think you’re beginning to figure things out, random stuff happens that leaves you scratching your head, like the maid’s hallucinations, the unexplained revival of Eva in her tomb or the flowers that turn into a cat. Despite its drawbacks, though, it’s a highly entertaining, sumptuously made piece of trash cinema that holds up to repeated viewings.” Filmiarity

vlcsnap-2012-10-25-21h08m08s124

” … achieves a hallucinatory ambience reminiscent of Mario Bava or Antonio Margheriti. At its worst it is as crude and banal as could be expected from a film-maker who later went on to specialise in sex / horror hybrids and outright porn.” Giallo Fever

Oculto – beer

Oculto-Bottle-Image

Oculto is an American beer launched in 2015 by the world’s largest brewing giant, Anheuser Busch (AB-InBev). Described as “blue agave infused” and “aged in tequila barrel staves”, the 6% beer is sold in a bottle that features an engraved skull image.

Reviews:

“The aroma on Oculto is puzzling and downright mysterious. Between the overly sweet “tequila” aromas flooding your olfactory, your brain will be racked with the task of dissecting the competing aromas of stale tortilla chips with soggy cardboard and sadness. If that doesn’t entice you to fill your parched mouth with the liquid fecal matter of the Mexican beer gods, then I’m just not sure what will!” The Brew Review Crew

“The addition of the sweetness to what should be a light and crisp style beer doesn’t add anything to the mix. It feels forced. Oculto is, unfortunately, a gimmick beer. It has a great brand and it’s an interesting idea, but it never really delivers. You’re much better off getting a light style lager like Tecate, Corona, or even a Budweiser with a shot of tequila, rather than an agave-sweetened beer that’s touched tequila staves.” Geoff Kleinman, DrinkSpirits.com

k2-_dde4df25-e719-48f4-82b1-43ec5351b5a3.v1

“It is not a bad beer, nor is it a good beer. This beer falls somewhere in between. You can taste the agave and the tequila, but the base beer itself isn’t very flavorful on its own. Perhaps this is why the instructions include limes and bar salt…” Terry Bunch, Beer Alien
