Reviews [click links to read more]:

“The whole idea that people can be so ruthless in general, is quite an effective concept. This addition to the script and gives the film leverage. While the special effects are cringe-worthy, they don’t have visual appeal or effect. These additions are pretty mediocre in this aspect.” Decay Mag

“A classic grindhouse title, which somewhat delivers on its premise: nearer to the “massacre” than the “strip club” side, I’d say. Indeed, it’s rather more restrained in terms of nudity than I’d have expected. The gore, on the other hand, is plentiful in volume, if not necessarily quality…” Girls with Guns

” …Clark and Kilroy are two of the promising hopes for these types of sick and twisted little horror films […] With a knack for casting strong female roles and an ability to come up with jarringly violent scenes, there’s no telling what type of horrific tale this duo will cook up together (or separately) in the future. Within the conventions of the genre, Strip Club Massacre is a massive success.” Irish Film Critic

“If you’re going to watch a film called Strip Club Massacre your expectations are probably not sky-high. With scantily clad females, stupid, yet fun (and unique) deaths, as well as a tongue in cheek attitude there is trashy enjoyment to be found here for sure.” The Rotting Zombie

” …Strip Club Massacre doesn’t feature too much sex and gore (though doesn’t shy away from either should the occasion ask for it) – instead, it’s a rather nicely built-up story that gets its tension out of Megan’s rather tragic story off-set by Jazz’s rather insane shenanigans until the whole thing comes to a head in a finale that’s not only quite mental but features quite a few unexpected twists.” Search My Trash

‘Beyond wildest dreams!’

The Wild World of Batwoman is a 1966 American science fiction superhero comedy feature film written, produced, directed and edited by Jerry Warren (Face of the Screaming Werewolf; Creature of the Walking Dead; Teenage Zombies; et al). The movie stars Katherine Victor (House of the Black Death; Curse of the Stone Hand; Teenage Zombies), George Andre, Steve Brodie and Richard Banks.

The Batman television series was hugely popular and had spawned a 1966 spin-off theatrical movie, so filmmaker Jerry Warren decided to make his own superhero bat-film. However, he was sued for copyright infringement, so re-released the film under the title She Was a Hippy Vampire.

Plot:

When arch-villain Rat Fink steals a top-secret atomic hearing aid that allows the user to listen in on any phone conversation worldwide, Batwoman and her all-girl army of bikini babes set out to recover it…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

” …the acting is so wooden that we have no idea whether they’re trying to be serious or not. The comedy is further hampered by director Warren, who lets most scenes run on far too long. Things do get substantially more goofy later in the film, but by then, it’s too late.” 2,500 Movies Challenge

” …a rip-off hack job no matter how you slice it, though its innocent veneer, period charm, and forced wackiness might endear the film to fans of similar goofs like Rat Pfink a Boo Boo or The Nasty RabbitAll Movie

” …a film entirely based upon the simple belief that the two finest things in the world are go-go dancing and face-pulling; and that together, they comprise the very essence of comedy.” And You Call Yourself a Scientist!

“I can’t think of any reason to recommend this movie. There is a lot of dancing, the plot is old-school silly, but the pacing and editing is so abysmal that the movie is nearly unwatchable.” Misan[trope]y

“[has] all the earmarks of Warren’s worst work, but rises above the level of something as tedious as Petrified World. It is funny in an unintentional way and sometimes is not hard to look at.” Fred Olen Ray, The New Poverty Row: Independent Filmmakers as Distributors, McFarland, 1991

“The shoestring budget, awful costumes, and bad performances lend the movie a certain amount of charm.  That’s not quite enough to sustain the entire running time, but it’s enough to make for an intermittently amusing flick.  Whenever things threaten to get dull, the scenes of scantily clad women go-go dancing help to maintain your interest.” The Video Vacuum

Cast and characters:

  • Katherine Victor … Batwoman
  • George Mitchell … Prof. G. Octavius Neon (as George Andre)
  • Steve Brodie … Jim Flanagan
  • Richard Banks … J.B. Christians / Rat Fink

Scarecrow’s Revenge is a 2019 British horror feature film about a female Viking warrior leading a battle against a demonic scarecrow.

Directed by Louisa Warren (Vikings vs. Krampus; Tooth Fairy and sequel; Curse of the Scarecrow; et al) from a screenplay written by Tom Jolliffe (Cyber Bride), the ChampDog Films production stars Peter Cosgrove, Louisa Warren, Kelly Juvilee and Richard D. Myers.

Scarecrow’s Revenge was produced by first assistant director Scott Jeffrey (Clown Doll; The Final Scream; The Bad Nun; writer of The House on Elm Lake; Unhinged; Fox Trap) and Louisa Warren.

Plot:

Summer, 802 A.D., North England: A band of Viking warriors banish Henrik from their village after his attempts to defile one of their daughters. Overcome with rage and vengeful lust, Henrik goes to the Witch of the Lake, where no man has ever returned alive.

In exchange for his earthly body and mortal soul, Henrik is given 48 hours in a new and seemingly indestructible, vessel, that of a cursed scarecrow.

Henrik sets out to destroy the warriors and the entire Viking village, whilst the witch waits with the promise of fresh souls to consume.

As the Warriors fall to the unstoppable scarecrow, the Chief’s daughter, Greta, defies her father’s wishes and sets out to fight. She suddenly finds the fate of the village in her hands and discovers hidden truths about her lineage that will define her future and the fate of those villagers. Only by embracing a part of herself she never realised existed, can she stop Henrik, but that comes at a price…

” …a dull slasher film. The kind where we’re told how awful the carnage is but never see it […] Scarecrow’s Revenge is an utter disaster. There is nothing to even momentarily redeem it, no gore, no skin and it’s not even good to laugh at. This is about as bad as it gets.” Voices from the Balcony

‘Press play for terror!’

Video Killer aka The Babyface Murders is a 2014 British supernatural horror feature film written and directed by Richard Mansfield. The Mansfield Dark Productions movie stars Victoria Falls, Jennie Fox, Michael Lieber, Darren Munn, Henry Regan and Jenny Lee. The film’s working title was V/H/S: Killer.

The film was released on DVD on the 13th September 2016 by Wild Eye Releasing and is available via Amazon.com

Plot:

When Amy receives a haunted VHS tape containing weird films from a figure stalking her she realises she is not alone and must find other victims who are being haunted to try and work out who is trying to kill them…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“The film has some creepy moments, particularly during the videos the lead watches, it also has a few really cool sequences and a few that will make viewers scratch their heads. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but still entertaining for a decent amount of its runtime.” Cinema Crazed

“Mansfield hasn’t skimped on genuine film-making techniques, with plenty of establishing shots, different angles and cuts, the sort of camera-work and editing that distinguishes a real film from something lazily cobbled together. Care has been taken to tell a story, albeit one that raises as many questions as it answers. The result is genuinely creepy, a fascinatingly unnerving tale of justified paranoia…” Cult films and the people who make them

Video Killer is a film about urban paranoia and primal fear which doesn’t offer any easy answers. It’s indebted to a number of J-Horror films like Hideo Nakata’s 1998 movie Ring (there’s a couple of scenes with lengths of murderous video tape which are genuinely weird), but the film also captures a world […] and the concepts of  ‘is it live or is it Memorex?’ (to quote an old ad line) are stretched to breaking point.” Dark Eyes of London

“The saddest part of the whole thing is that there could have been a decent film produced out of all this.  The entire cast is game, and lead Victoria Falls gives an excellent performance despite the underwritten character she’s given. Also, the found footage style is very forgiving to a small budget.  However, the tone of the film is all over the place.” HNN

“Annoying one-note characters mar this conceptually intriguing story of a sentient, violent videotape, with shades of the Saw series and It Follows, among others. It’s meandering for a short movie and proves once and for all that there’s nothing scary about a furry hooded parka.” Horrorscreams Videovault

” …there are some great camera angles, particularly during the park scenes, the writing and characters are believable – for example, being an adult doesn’t mean you suddenly stop being afraid — and it’s overall a great story […] I believe Mansfield has created something interesting, enjoyable, original and most importantly, at points, scary.” The London Horror Society

‘Don’t trust what you can’t see’

Alone is a 2019 American horror thriller feature film about a writer seeking solitude in the countryside in an attempt to recover from tragedy and finish her book. However, as the welcoming country house turns into a living hell, she soon realizes that her inner demons are not the worst of her problems…

Directed by Vladislav Khesin from a screenplay co-written with Samuel Bandeira, Gabriel Legua and Olabode Olakanmi. The Broken Cage Studio production stars Elizabeth Arends (Abruptio), Sara Anne, Albina Katsman and Bailey Coppola.

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“The most notable thing about the direction is a couple of nice uses of reflective surfaces. The writing isn’t great, and events are sometimes downright confusing. I was left feeling that the movie was “not bad” […] The end credits start rolling at just 76 minutes, so Alone won’t take up too much of your time if you decide to check it out.” Arrow in the Head

“Given budget restraints and lack of experience, Alone could’ve been much worse than it was. This movie features some interesting concepts and a few very effective sequences, topped with interesting camera-work and solid visuals […] Nonetheless, Alone has more negative aspects than positive ones.” Horror World & Reviews

‘The beast is waiting on the dark side of the moor’

Xmoor is a 2014 British horror feature film about two American documentary filmmakers who travel to North Devon to film the legendary wild cat beast.

Written and directed by Luke Hyams, the Fyzz Facility Film Two stars Melia Kreiling, Mark Bonnar, Nick Blood and Simone Kirby. It is also known as X Moor and The Beast of Xmoor

Plot:

American documentary filmmakers Georgia and her boyfriend Matt travel to Exmoor, the remote vast North Devon moor, in a bid to capture the fabled beast purported to be a wild cat, like a panther or a puma, on film for a £25,000 reward offered by a local newspaper. They meet up with a hunter named Fox and head out onto the moors…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

” …the narrative suffers from its plot contrivances, its one-dimensional and often moronic characters, its poor lighting, and its dragged out ending. It doesn’t leave an impression of terror or suspense, either. I’d only recommend it if you’re looking to kill 80 minutes and have nothing better to watch.” Cinematic Addiction

“Hyams shows that he has potential, at least in terms of a couple of the ideas that he has thrown in the mix […] It’s the execution that lets him down. What could have been a tight and interesting little thriller is instead turned into something a bit too messy, and a bit too ridiculous, to succeed.” For It Is Man’s Number

” …Xmoor feels like a story of two halves but never actually has one decent full one. It’s disappointing because there’s potential here with some great ideas and shots but the two threads combined together just don’t work that well. The minor characters written into the film also feel a little conflicting at times with their actions going against what you’d expect them to do in the position they’re in.” Horror Cult Films

“Hyams knows where to put the camera, and the long stretches of near-pitch blackness (and the accompanying sound design) serve to heighten tension, rather than (as is sometimes the case) betray a meagre lighting budget. That said, accents aside, Hyams does make a few other dodgy choices: notably the ripped-clothes ‘outfit’ Georgia is rather gratuitously given to wear for the third act…” TheHorrorShow.tv

” …an atmospheric survivalist horror. It’s a handsome looking film, with cool score and credits, and evocative photography of the wet and windy terrain […] The characters are well-drawn and the cast is excellent. Melia Kreiling’s Georgia’s got balls and a conscience and given what she goes through in the course of one night, she’s destined to join the ranks of horror’s other fierce Final Girls.” Kultguy’s Keep

X Moor was a nice idea wasted by taking it down a different route which then became a routine survival in the woods movie with a screaming young woman as the focus.” The Movie Scene

“Filmed in Northern Ireland with a not-too-shabby million pound budget, you can’t help but think Xmoor might have impressed a little more than it does. The main issue for me was the rather tenuous inclusion of the panther aspect to the story; it just seems like a frivolous diversion to what essentially wants to be a serial killer themed stalk n’ slash.” The Schlock Pit

“Hyams hasn’t crafted an instant classic or anything of the sort here (although he shows all the signs of having one in him at some future point), but his script is well-paced, the direction is taut, the setting creepily atmospheric, the performances very solid indeed, and the tension gets thick enough to cut with a knife on a pleasingly high number of occasions.” Trash Film Guru

The Omega Entertainment production stars Meg Foster (Haunted: 333; Shrunken Heads; They Live), Wings Hauser, Robert Morley (Theatre of Blood; A Study in Terror; The Old Dark House), David McCallum (The Haunting of Morella; The Watcher in the Woods; Dogs), and Steve Railsback (Ed Gein; Lifeforce; Turkey Shoot)

The score was composed by Hans Zimmer and Stanley Myers (The Witches; Schizo; Tam-Lin).

Plot:

Novelist Sian Anderson (Meg Foster) travels from Los Angeles to the solitude of Greek island Monemvasia to write her newest mystery book.

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“If it’s one thing Mastorakis delivers this time around, it’s atmosphere. Take the Greek locations and quality cinematography, and enrich it with a Hans Zimmer score, and you mostly have a winner […] for an “Old Dark House” thriller-horror, with Meg Foster home alone and Wings brandishing a scythe (!), The Wind is worth seeing.” Comeuppance Reviews

best-pictures-of-meg-foster

” …marred by a clunky and sometimes muddled script, a tendency to ham-handedness (both in the dialogue and the way the musical score is used) and a reiteration of many the usual psycho-killer and slasher cliches.” Fantastic Movie Musings and Ramblings

” …this wasn’t too bad. Hauser made a great baddie, Foster was great as the protagonist, and there was a nice mixture of Hitchcockian and horror elements that made this more than just a bad Lifetime movie type deal.” Direct to Video Connoisseur

wings-hauser-the-wind-1986

“Aside from the fact that Hauser is the first movie villain to be unhinged by experiences in Nicaragua rather than Vietnam, this is a totally conventional stalker, without even the frills of Mastorakis’ Blind Date (1984) or The Zero Boys (1986).” The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Horror

“The camerawork and editing is good, the setting is skillfully used by the cinematographer and it looks great. Creaky, fluttering shutters and the constant sound of the wind helps to create a nice creepy atmosphere. The soundtrack, by Hans Zimmer, is great.” Independent Flicks

meg-foster-the-wind-1987-pic-9

“The film relies more on suspense and sounds rather than gore and shocks. It’s quite a slow picture, but the Greek scenes in daylight are easy to fall in love with. We once again have another sickle killer movie, though not nearly as inventive as Mountaintop Motel Massacre. You see virtually nothing when people die, and the suspense isn’t inviting, but dawdling in place.” Oh, the Horror!

“The climactic showdown feels padded and does not work on any level. The wind effects are good, the gore works for what little of it there is, and Mastorakis’ direction at times reminded me of Soavi or Argento, two European horror masters. Hans Zimmer adds a good musical score.” Tatum Archive

Choice dialogue:

Elias Appleby: “I hope I haven’t been too much of a pain in the derrière, dear girl? And I hope you don’t mind me calling you ‘dear girl’?”

‘Eat or be eaten’

Dismal is a 2009 American horror feature film about a group of students on a field trip to swamps who come up against backwoods cannibals. It has also been released as Bleed

Directed by Gary King (Among Us) from a screenplay written by Bo Buckley, the Fearmakers Studios production stars Lydia Chandler, Tim Morris (In the Pines), Bill Oberst Jr. (3 From Hell; The Chair; Ditch Day Massacre; Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies; et al) and Jack Harrison (Attack of the Alien Jelly Monsters from the Depths of Uranus; Savage, 2011).

Plot:

Dana (Lydia Chandler) is failing Biology. To pass she must attend an extra credit assignment with several classmates that will lead them into a remote region of the Great Dismal Swamp, a place teeming with life… and death.

While the group keeps one eye out for hungry bear, deadly snakes and lurking gators, they are unaware of the real danger. For the top of the food chain lives in a dingy cabin not too far from their campsite and he has an appetite for human flesh…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Oberst puts his twelve years of theatre acting to good measure […] Morris also shows that characters do not necessarily need to be one dimensional. Bo Buckley’s writing develops the bait and switch with quiet charm to later hellish delight. There are higher quality elements in Dismal, but the film as a whole does not rise above conventions.” 28 Days Later Analysis

“The scenery and settings are good. The gore is plentiful and creative, its a mix of good looking practical effects and some not so great CGI. Pacing is great as this film never gets boring. It has a good and fitting soundtrack, the acting is good and especially Bill Oberst, Jr. is great as Ranger Dale.” Independent Flicks

Dismal is grisly fare, reminding this reviewer of old school Australian horror films, not slick or stylized at all, just gritty, gruesome horror. Oberst, as usual, dominates the film, who not only has the best lines but mostly controls the action. Chandler, as the plucky Dana, puts in some decent face time…” MatchFlick

” …it’s a decent effort but it’s derivative and familiar material that we’ve seen time and time again. That combined with some lacklustre special effects work knocks the grade down a bit on this one. It strives to be a Wrong Turn (2003) or Hatchet (2006) but falls short of the mark. Not quite a recommend but perhaps a rental.” McBastard’s Mausoleum

“Other than the sluggish first half and sh*tty characters and predictable plot, Dismal is a fairly entertaining redneck inbred cannibal mutant flick.” The Video Vacuum

  • Lydia Chandler … Dana
  • Tim Morris … Curt

Cannibal is an interactive horror graphic adventure made with Unity, with the direction and script of Ruggero Deodato, and the original drawings of Solo Macello, in which the player will take control of different characters, to reveal, little by little, the background that led them to a desperate expedition to the virgin jungles of Borneo. And of course, get to discover the end of the story, destined to shake from the foundations every certainty acquired during the game.”

The game’s creators, Unity, has stated that it will be released on PS4, X-Box, Steam, mobile, and (even) Nintendo Switch on November 20th.

We’ll believe it when we see it. And this brief teaser, which is just footage from the notorious movie, plus an added logo is hardly enticing. Could it be a prank?

‘Some doors were meant to remain closed’

The Asylum is a 2000 British horror feature film about a young woman who is plagued by endless visions and nightmares; she suspects that as a child, she was responsible for the brutal murder of her own mother.

Written and directed by John Stewart, the Nunhead Films production stars Steffanie Pitt, Nick Waring, Ingrid Pitt (The Wicker Man; Countess Dracula; The Vampire Lovers), Patrick Mower (Incense for the Damned; Cry of the Banshee; The Devil Rides Out), Robin Askwith (Queen Kong; Horror Hospital; Tower of Evil) and Colin Baker (Doctor Who).

Reviews [click links to read more]:

The Asylum apes the films it references so much that it contains all their worst aspects – poor special effects, bad acting and a leaden pace. For anyone who isn’t a fan, it’s like sitting through a 90-minute in-joke that you just don’t get […] But the problem is that the deaths aren’t graphic enough for a 21st-century film, and the plot doesn’t make any sense at all. ” British Horror Films

“It’s slow-moving and parts are senseless and silly.” Psychotronic Video magazine

The Asylum is about as backwards-looking as it could be, a deliberate throwback to Hammer/Amicus (with hints of giallo) in the woefully mistaken belief that what horror fans wanted was a rehash of past glories.” MJ Simpson, Urban Terrors: New British Horror Cinema 1997-2008, Hemlock Books, 2012

“Technically smooth on an obviously slim budget, The Asylum is just as good as the Hammer/Amicus UK horror pics of the ‘70s that it clearly emulates […] By modern standards, however, that means only tacky-to-OK.” Variety

Choice dialogue:

‘It’s time to prey’

Breeders aka Deadly Instincts is a 1997 British horror feature film about an alien that emerges from a meteorite on a college campus to mate with humans.

Written and directed by Paul Matthews (Berserker: Hell’s Warrior; Grim), the movie stars Todd Jensen, Samantha Womack (aka Samantha Janus), Oliver Tobias and Kadamba Simmons. It is a very loose remake of the 1986 American film of the same name.

Reviews [click links to read more]:

” …it’s deathly dull. The shower scenes and explosions seem to be a desperate attempt to wake people up. Maybe this would have been a good Outer Limits episode- at maybe 45 minutes. But at an hour and 34 minutes, it drags, drags, drags.” The Bad Movie Report

“Truly, outside of Samantha Janus’ lower half, there’s not a lot to recommend in this one […] the actors struggled mightily with just about everything, part of this being… I’m guessing… that the majority of them were British trying in vain to fake American accents, and the pacing was too erratic and when it wasn’t erratic it was just slow.” Film Critics United

“Paul Matthews is the man who wrote and directed the film, and I can only imagine how much fun it is to be inside his mind. The plot is ridiculous, the characterisations are awful, the special effects are ropey (but enjoyably so) and the acting is woeful from everyone involved.” For It Is Man’s Number

“Even with all the derivativeness and storytelling deficiencies (and mediocre sound effects and bad music), most unforgivable of all is the pacing, which allows for far too much time to pass in between sequences of suspense. In the end, Breeders is more offensively boring than anything else.” Gone with the Twins

“I found myself wondering when they were going to explain the creature’s origin and then bam they just dump all the info at once at about the forty-five-minute mark.  Build-up- what’s that?!?  This one is generic and it is bad, but the suit design and silly story keep it from being terrible.” Mondo Bizarro

“We get a lot of unnecessary scenes involving our couple, some gratuitous nudity, and, very occasionally, a look at the alien–he’s not as impressive as he is on the cover of the movie. None of this really adds up or makes much sense, but it all leads to an ending that is as disjointed and bizarrely entertaining as the rest of the movie.” Quick Horror Movie Reviews

“Starts off okay, in a bad sort of way, but quickly clones Aliens and loses in every aspect of comparison. On its own, this is a mostly drab outing with too many sluggish scenes.” Splatter Critic

“To give Matthews’ version of Breeders some credit, at least he went for the traditional man in a rubber suit instead of relying on CGI like so many b-films of today; as a result, unlike so many b-films of today, the monster looks pretty OK—sometimes even effectively mean and nasty. Regrettably, little else in the film is either effective or nasty…” A Wasted Life

“Is Ashley’s proclivity to engage in pre-marital sex with his students indicative of the treachery women face at institutions of higher learning?  Can a slimy, toothy monster from a far off galaxy find happiness in a college orgy? I guess that’s an easy one. Breeders is a fun film and the ending is wild.” Zisi Emporium for B Movies

Choice dialogue:

Moore: “Drink, drugs, I’ve seen it all before. But alien monsters? That’s a new one.”

‘When the lights go out the terror begins’

Poltergeist Activity is a 2015 British horror feature film about a grieving father and his teenage daughter menaced by a paranormal spectral presence.

Produced and directed by Andrew Jones, the North Bank Entertainment production stars Lee Bane (Robert the Doll franchise; The Legend of Halloween Jack; Werewolves of the Third Reich), Natalie Martins (Vampire Virus; The Barge People), Jared Morgan (The Nun; The Amityville Asylum; Goodnight, God Bless) and Judith Haley (The Revenge of Robert the Doll; The Exorcism of Anna Ecklund).

Plot:

After the death of his wife, David Prescott (Lee Bane) moves to a secluded farmhouse in a Welsh village with his teenage daughter Katherine (Natalie Martins). A stressful, upsetting time is soon made all the worse when they encounter unexplained occurrences and frightening visions in their new home.

Desperate for answers, David turns to retired paranormal investigator Hans Voltz (Jared Morgan) who must rediscover all of his skill and spiritual strength to defeat the spectral menace…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“All of the horror falls flat, which is the main reason why most won’t like this movie but it’s still one that never becomes terribly unappealing to watch. It’s just too original and creatively put together for that, though I definitely wouldn’t go as far to call this movie a great or totally recommendable one as well.” Boba_Fett1138

” …Poltergeist Activity cannot exactly be classified as careless filmmaking, though there are certainly camera shots and script beats where the apparent attitude is, “eh, good enough.” Poltergeist Activity is a film made for function.  Even the producers are unlikely to argue that the intention is anything above speedily pumping out a by-the-basics production…” Culture Crypt

“Even though Poltergeist Activity was a good eighty minutes long, nothing much actually happened. The whole thing felt like a build-up to something which never came along; so, naturally, it wasn’t very enjoyable. There’s good bad horror, and then there’s just bad horror. This fits the bill.” HNN

” …from being a shallow exercise in ghostly goings-on, there’s some really well-written parts of the narrative that look at the effects of grief, and how they can damage relationships within the family unit. A welcome bonus in Poltergeist Activity is the appearance of Jones regular Jared Morgan…” The Schlock Pit

Cast and characters:

  • Lee Bane … David Prescott
  • Natalie Martins … Katherine Prescott
  • Jared Morgan … Hans Voltz
  • Judith Haley … Mrs Blankenship
  • Tricia Ford … Ethel McKenzie
  • Sam Harding … Alex
  • Gwynfryn West … Jim Ogilvie

  • Felicity Boylett … Doll Face Ghosts
  • Dean Sills … Maxwell Statler

Technical details:

  • 84 minutes

Trivia:

The film ends with a quote by Edgar Allan Poe: “The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?” The famous quote comes from his short horror story ‘The Premature Burial’.

The Cloth – USA, 2013 – overview and reviews

The Cloth is a 2013 American horror feature film about a godless man who is recruited by a secret Catholic organization to combat demonic possessions.

Written and directed by Justin Price (Abominable; Alien: Reign of Man; The 13th Friday; The Elf; et al), the Eminence Productions-Cloth Film movie stars Danny Trejo, Eric Roberts, Rachele Brooke Smith, Justin Price, Robert Miano, Lassiter Holmes and Kyler Willett.

Plot:

A secret organization, The Cloth, has been formed by the Catholic Church to counteract the rising number of cases of demonic possessions across the country.

A young godless man named Jason (Kyler Willett) is recruited into The Cloth in order to prepare a new generation with the tools needed to perform exorcisms on the damned and stop the rise of the ultimate evil, Beelzebub…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“It’s good to see Eric Roberts again. But it’s a shame that he and Danny Trejo are on the cover (above) but only have a cameo in the movie. I don’t like that kind of entrapment. That’s a no-no. The cover looks cool by the way. But the movie isn’t.” 5 Second Review

“Next time I’d advise Justin to get a script editor in to check over the script before he starts shooting, get someone else to edit the film for him, and also get additional help to do second unit stuff like the fight choreography, which is really poor here. Oh, and save up some money for the special effects, which are sub-par Lawnmower Man here.” Blueprint: Review

“Somewhere along the line, The Cloth may have started with a decent idea and good intentions.  But it did not have the production tools to bring that idea to life, and seemingly spent its resources on name actors it barely even used […] The Cloth is not a good film.  And frankly, that is the mildest way to put it.” Culture Crypt

“The head of the order is played by […] Eric Roberts as Father Tollman. As with Trejo what you see on the posters or in a trailer is pretty much the extent of his role. Armed with their fancy weapons as agents of God Jason and Diekmen go hunting demons; unfortunately, their holy Q, quartermaster, couldn’t arm them with a cohesive script.” Home Theater Info

” …the film looks a treat and belies its low budget to create some impressive effects, particularly in the creatures and make-up department. It also moves along at a fair old pace and chucks in plenty of good old-fashioned priests vs. demons action sequences. On balance, however, the fundamental problems with both the story and the acting prevent me from giving The Cloth anything other than a cautious recommendation.” HNN

“The dialogue does sometimes leave these actors in the lurch, however, and never rises above the mildly amusing level of, “That’s holy water… bitch.” More damaging than any shortcomings of casting, however, are the filmmakers’ insistence on bringing to the screen effects-reliant phantasmagorias that are simply beyond the means of such a limited budget.” Ideological Content Analysis

“It checks so many boxes in the ‘This Sounds Cool as a Film’ Checklist…but sucks. For one, their CG is bad. No matter how neat the weapons may sound, the effects suck. Second, the action scenes are just hard to follow […] I’m less bothered by it than most. That said, these ones are awful.” Mondo Bizarro

“The sound/graphics/writing/editing/ cinematography etc are on par with the across-the-board performances which means… well, let’s just say that Kyler Willett isn’t even convincing as a real human being, much less an actor.” Seraphic Wings

“Priests fighting demons…that’s about it. Eric Roberts is in this for five minutes proving he’ll act in anything for a paycheck. Danny Trejo is also in this for an additional five minutes […] The main hero in this is the less talented clone of Paul Walker. Think about that for a minute.” Wide Weird World of Cult Films

‘The mansion. The madness. The maniac. No escape.’

Silent Night, Bloody Night is a 1972 American horror feature film directed by Theodore Gershuny (Sugar Cookies) from a screenplay co-written with Jeffrey Konvitz (The Sentinel) and Ira Teller. Future Troma head honcho, Lloyd Kaufman was an associate producer.

The movie was filmed with the working title Zora, before being titled Night of the Dark Full Moon and released very sporadically in 1972. It was re-released in 1974 as Silent Night, Bloody Night (the title by which it is best known) and again during the 1981 horror boom as Deathouse (Death House on most advertising).

Buy DVD: Amazon.com

The film stars Patrick O’Neal and Mary Woronov in leading roles, with John Carradine in a supporting performance. Many of the cast and crew members were former Andy Warhol collaborators: Mary Woronov, Ondine, Candy Darling, Kristen Steen, Tally Brown, Lewis Love, filmmaker Jack Smith and artist Susan Rothenberg.

Plot:

People trying to sell an isolated mansion with a dark history in Massachusetts are being stalked and killed by an escaped maniac. But who is this deranged murderer and why do the local townspeople act so strange?

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“As far as 70’s drive-in cheapies go, Silent Night, Bloody Night has a lot of unexpected suspense, directorial skill, and style. Obviously, it’s not without its issues, there’s some stiff performances and the long-winded, freeze-framed expository parts aren’t exactly filmic but nitpicking a film like SNBN seems feeble when the foundation is so strong.” Another Night In

“Despite including acting heavyweights such as John Carradine in Silent Night, Bloody Night what we are given is ultimately a cast of forgettable characters remiss of emotional depth or conviction. Notwithstanding a genuinely artistic final act, after its weapon-wielding kills and yarn of plot there is little left to enjoy, although some might find that this is enough to keep them watching for 85 minutes, as it did indeed me on this occasion.” Attack from Planet B

0YdsLt9

“The fitfully interesting film contains some nicely atmospheric moments and some fairly shocking gore.” The Horror Film

“A gory and gripping exploiter that looks a lot better but it’s obviously low-budget, thanks to atmospheric direction and very effective cinematography.” Alan Frank, The Horror Film Handbook

“Silent Night, Bloody Night is a painfully slow affair, plotted for maximum irritation, with a deferred mystery structure that will have you screaming with impatience after the first hour. Gershuny shows some visual style, as seen in isolated arty shots here and there, but he directs in ponderous mood, patching over events he can’t properly elaborate with snippets of tiresome voiceover (and the post-synch recording is poor for an American film…” Stephen Thrower, Nightmare USA: The Untold Story of the Exploitation Independents

This movie has it all–it’s ambitious, gothic, disturbing, atmospheric, scary, twisty, a whole lot of fun to watch–oh, and well acted, written, and directed…If Night of the Living Dead set the standard for zombie flicks to come, Silent Night, Bloody Night set the standard for approximately every slasher flick that followed. Nearly every scene (and plot device and technique) is ripped off by later films, even by classics of the genre…’ Hysteria Lives
