Zombie Desert (aka The Desert, original title: El Desierto) is a 2013 Argentinian science fiction horror film directed by Christoph Behl. It stars Lautaro Delgado, Victoria Almeida, William Prociuk, Lucas Lagré.

Plot teaser:

Axel, Jonathan and Ana live together in a bunker-like home with views over the post-apocalyptic landscape. They once lived in a love triangle idyll, with strong bonds of friendship, but the arrival of the zombies changed that. Ana is with Jonathan and Axel is alone, slowly tattooing his body with images of flies, while developing an almost voyeuristic obsession with the couple’s relationship. However, everything changes when Axel and Jonathan go out on an expedition in search of provisions and return to the house with a zombie that they call Pythagoras, who they keep chained and muzzled inside the house. As the dynamic of the trios relationship changes it becomes clear that their new prisoner may not be the biggest threat to their survival…

Reviews:

“Anyone who wants to make a zombie movie should watch The Desert as it’s a film that gets what the genre has always been about – the characters rather than the action. This may be one of the greatest zombie movies of all-time and it features little to no undead set pieces. Everything is told visually and the cinematography is first class. The Desert is beautiful, touching, moving, gripping and simply outstanding.” Luke Oweb, The Flickering Myth

“For horror fans who prefer the slow descent into madness as opposed to the gore of the undead, then check out The Desert. If that’s not really what you’re into, then who’s the REAL monster, huh?! It’s you. It’s probably you.” The Wolfman Cometh

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth is a 1992 American-Canadian horror film and third installment in the Hellraiser franchise, directed by Anthony Hickox from a screenplay by Peter Atkins and Tony Randel based on characters created by Clive Barker.

It stars Doug BradleyTerry Farrell (Legion, Psychic Murders)Paula Marshall (Warlock: The Armageddon), and Kevin Bernhardt. It was the first Hellraiser film to be made outside the UK.

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 13.53.23

Heavy metal band Armored Saint appear in a nightclub scene. The film featured a metal-rock soundtrack and Barker directed the Motörhead video for “Hellraiser”, featuring Lemmy and Pinhead playing a game of cards.

Plot teaser:

The revelation of his own former humanity in Hellraiser II has resulted in the Cenobite named Pinhead being split into two distinct entities: His former self, World War I British Army Captain Elliot Spencer, and a manifestation of Spencer’s id, which takes on the form of Pinhead. While Spencer ends up in limbo, Pinhead is trapped, along with the puzzle box, amongst the writhing figures and distorted faces etched into the surface of an intricately carved pillar — the Pillar of Souls.

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 14.02.18

The pillar is bought by the rich and spoiled J.P. Monroe, owner of a popular nightclub called The Boiler Room. During her investigation, an ambitious young television reporter, Joey Summerskill, slowly begins to learn about Pinhead and the mysterious puzzle box. Joey is introduced to the pain the box can bring when she views a teenage clubgoer being ripped apart by the box’s chains in a hospital emergency room. Joey tracks the box and a young woman named Terri to The Boiler Room nightclub. Terri had previously stolen the box from the nightclub.

hellraiser III

Video tape interviews are recovered from the Channard Institute of one of Pinhead’s former victims Kirsty Cotton. Joey and Terri learn through the videos about the demonic Cenobites and the power of the Lament Configuration puzzle box and that it is the only means of sending Pinhead back to Hell…

Reviews:

“Despite its spotty pacing, schizophrenic plot veerings, and frequently unimpressive special effects, there’s still just a few tasty drops of fun to be found in Hellraiser 3 – especially if you’ve already seen episodes four through eight. The commitment to the previous entries is tenuous, but it seems clear that director Anthony Hickox and screenwriter Peter Atkins were at least trying to offer some new mythology while keeping the fans happy … Arguably the weakest of the trilogy, but still packing just enough brains and red meat to keep the Pinfans sated.” Scott Weinberg, DVD Talk

” … there is no trace of the disturbing intersection between the physical and psychological that were the backbone of the first two films, and even though Bradley plays Pinhead in all the same ways, the villain feels much different, and more hollow: he’s just a killer with outré fashion sense. He isn’t actually dangerous, any more than any given movie psycho slasher is dangerous, because he just fills a story role. The old Pinhead represented a coherent and suitably disturbing philosophy, and was an infinitely better villain as a result.” Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy

hellraiser III doug bradley pinhead

Hellraiser III ice dagger victim

“For all the blasphemies and British accent, Pinhead is just a sub-Freddy goon, and the ambiguities and perversities Barker is so fond of have been neatly tidied-up. This is the sort of picture teenagers in malls in Akron, Ohio might understand — a good horror sequel, and that’s all.” Jack Yeovil, Empire Magazine

” … sundry characters are skinned instantly, sliced with CDs, have drills or cameras rammed through their heads, smoke cigarettes from open wounds, explode in bloody chunks or distort like toffee. In the tradition of sequel-as-spectacle, this is almost as effective and crowd-pleasing a recap of basic principles as A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors (1987) or Evil Dead II (1987).” The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Horror

satanwar satan war VHS

Satanwar (aka Satan War) is a 1979 American horror film written and directed by Bart LaRue. It stars Sally Sehermerhorn, Jimmy Drankovitch, Jane August, Reggie De Morton, Michelene Alexander and The Elaine Thompson Dancers.

satan-war-title

Plot:

Newlyweds Bill and Louise Foster move into the house of their dreams but it quickly becomes a nightmare. Goop oozes out of cabinets and coffee pots, little earthquakes keep happening, things go bump in the night, kitchen chairs keep running into Louise, and, worst of all, the Foster’s cross keeps inverting itself over and over on their wall…

satanwar inverted cross

Reviews:

“The first hour is slow, repetitive and deadly dull in its familiarity. Aside from one brief scene, it’s all filmed in one house. There are a hundred shots of the crucifix on the wall, dozens of the coffee pot and long scenes of the characters cleaning up messes and walking around. As for the actors, they all appear to have been dubbed in post and are terrible enough to provide a few chuckles here and there … The synthesizer music score sounds like an annoying ambulance siren and it never seems to stop.”  The Bloody Pit of Horror

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 20.09.43

“It’s Amityville Horror in a small home on a Los Angeles street. And, it is very deliberate. Just two people, most of the time. The same five or so minutes of music play constantly. All the dialog is dubbed. It is one of those films that finds a very strange, almost Night of Horror groove, and then milks it for an hour. In fact, when stuff actually happens in the final ten minutes, it’s kind of scary. Mainly because you didn’t expect anything to actually occur.” Dan Budnik, Bleeding Skull!

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 20.29.01

” … a sublimely inept attempt at an Amityville Horror rip-off, a 76 minute movie with approximately an hour of plot, followed by a 15-minute Mondo-style presentation on the satanic elements of voodoo. The film proper is introduced with narration explaining that Satan’s demons target not just the general population, but Christians as well. This is demonstrated through the sad “true” tale of Bill and Louise Foster, whose new home is so ghastly — I leave the kitchen wallpaper to your imagination — that haunting seems redundant.” Mondo 70

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 20.27.24

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 20.26.52

“if you’re into boring, droning music drowning out actors, spinning crosses and bad acting/direction, then you should spend the time necessary finding this film.  If not, you should leave Bill and Louise with the ghosts or the boogymen or something, and save your time and money on this one.|” Internal Bleeding

delivery the beast within 2013 brian netto

Delivery: The Beast Within - formerly known as Delivery –  is a 2013 American found footage horror film directed by Brian Netto from a screenplay by himself and Adam Schindler. It stars Laurel Vail (The Night Caller – short), Danny Barclay and Rob Cobuzio.

The Collective have announced a limited theatrical release from May 30, 2014 with VOD available May 27, 2014.

Official synopsis:

Kyle and Rachel Massy, a young couple who agree to document their first pregnancy for a family-oriented reality TV show. The production spirals out-of-control after the cameras capture a series of unexplained events, leading Rachel to believe that a malevolent spirit has possessed their unborn child. Delivery is told through the show’s abandoned and unaired reality footage, as well as testimonials from friends, family and crew members, providing a first-hand account of the Massys’ tragic story…

Reviews:

” … makes such great use of modern day conventions and sentiments and uses those tools to take the story in different and unexpected directions. The film maintains a high level of tension and just the right amount of all out scares without going overboard. It’s engrossing and unsettling in all the right ways, and it proves that in skilled hands, the “found footage” style need not be reduced to a gimmick.” Alex Koehne, Twitch

“The final moments of this film are so intense, so frightening, and so real that even though you know it’s a movie, you’re going to be fooled by the reality of it all. The trailer below doesn’t do the film justice, as it makes the film feel like it’s a Paranormal Activity riff and while the haters will dismiss this film immediately, Delivery is more effective than the last three PA films combined. If the final moments of this film don’t affect you in some way, you must already be dead. I was hit hard by this film which feels more like a documentary than a true found footage film. The scares are intense, the mood is dire, and the people in danger are worth rooting for.” Ambush Bug, Ain’t It Cool News

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals – released in the USA as Trap Them and Kill Them – is a 1977 Italian erotic horror film, directed by Joe D’Amato (Aristide Massaccesi). The film is part of a loose series of Black Emanuelle films, mostly starring Laura Gemser and directed by D’Amato, which emerged in the second half of the 1970s.

Following the global success of the softcore sex film Emmanuelle in 1974, many film producers around the world climbed on the bandwagon. Possibly because the Emmanuelle producers had the world’s worst lawyers, or possibly because copyright was rather more lax at the time, many of these films managed to use the Emmanuelle name by simply changing the spelling – in the case of Black Emanuelle and its sequels, this involved dropping one ‘M’.

garden_of_eatin_03

While the original Black Emanuelle, made in 1975, was simply a softcore travelogue very much in the tradition of the original film, but with Laura Gemser – actually Eurasian rather than black, but that seemed close enough for 1970s audiences – in the title role. Interestingly, the same year she made Black Emanuelle, she also appeared in Emmanuelle 2. This version of the character was a photo journalist, who found herself getting into all manner of erotic adventures.

rtbnhywxyyjsbig

Under the guidance of D’Amato – who took over the series after Black Emanuelle 2 – the films rapidly became more and more outlandish and shocking. By 1977 – a year in which no less than four entries in the series were released, Emanuelle was investigating snuff movie rings in Emanuelle in America, violence against women in Emanuelle Around the World and even became a nun in Sister Emanuelle! These films pushed the limits of good taste – Emanuelle in America has graphic fake snuff movie footage, hardcore sex and even a woman getting frisky with a horse, while Emmanuelle Around the World had violent rape scenes and hardcore sex inserts. It was no surprise, therefore, that D’Amato would combine the series with the newly popular cannibal films spawned by Ruggero Deodato’s Last Cannibal World. We should perhaps be grateful that he wasn’t pursuing the outrage a year earlier, or we might have had a Naziploitation Emanuelle film!

emanuelle-and-the-white-slave-trade-+-last-cannibals-040d4

In Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, Emanuelle, while working undercover at a hospital, stumbles upon a girl who seems to have been raised by a tribe of cannibals in the Amazon (this discovery is made when a nurse has her breast bitten off!). She decides to make an expedition to the jungle to find the tribe, taking a professor (played by Gemser’s real life husband and regular co-star Gabriele Tinti) and Susan Scott along, among others. After much erotic romping with both sexes, Emanuelle and her party are captured by the cannibals…

600full-emanuelle-and-the-last-cannibals-screenshot

It’s hard to see who this was aimed at. The film has plenty of softcore sex, but it’s likely that the audience lured by the Emanuelle name would be repulsed by the graphic gore (which included graphic castration and some very poor optically created dismemberment), while horror fans would have assumed the film to simply be soft porn. However, the film has since gained a cult following, and is now seen as one of the highlights of the Black Emanuelle series. The film is now seen as a precursor to D’Amato’s sex-horror zombie films Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Porno Holocaust.

The film is a highly fictionalised account of the rise to power and eventual downfall of King Richard III of England, freely combining elements derived from the plots of William Shakespeare’s plays Richard III and Macbeth. It is also an adaptation of the 1939 film of the same name, starring Basil RathboneBoris Karloff and Price. The 1962 version contains The Battle of Bosworth scenes from the 1939 film.

Plot teaser:

Richard, the duke of Gloucester (Vincent Price), is dismayed when his dying brother King Edward IV names their brother George, Duke of Clarence as Protector to his young son and heir, Prince Edward. Richard wants the position himself, to become de facto ruler after his brother’s death. He secretly stabs George to death with a dagger bearing the crest of the Woodville family, framing the dying king’s in-laws. Richard is now named Protector. His wife Anne approves of his crime and encourages him to take the throne for himself.

Reviews:

What’s most surprising is that a director better known for movies like Attack of the Crab Monsters and The Little Shop of Horrors actually does a pretty good job with this lowbrow reinterpretation. It shouldn’t really be a surprise, though, when you think about it. Seriously, if you strip away the blank verse and the Elizabethan grammar, England’s most famous playwright has more in common with a B-movie shlockmeister than your high school English teacher would care to admit. Sex, suicide, Satanism, child murder, torture, toilet humor… am I talking about William Shakespeare, or am I talking about Joe D’Amato?” 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting

torrel05

“Vincent Price’s meltdown into tortured guilt comes at the beginning rather than toward the end as it might in any other film, which tends to tip the dramatic balance of the story the wrong way. The rest of the time Roger Corman focuses on the Grand Guignol sadism and torture set-pieces – a cage filled with rats placed on a victim’s head, a woman tortured on a rack, Richard drowning his brother in a barrel of wine. As such, Tower of London proves modestly entertaining.” Moria: Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Review

vlcsnap2011042110h17m26

Tower of London works as a curiosity piece foremost. It’s also a fairly solid film that’s carried by a great, smarmy performance by Price, who spends most of the time being an asshole that kills people (he’s even tricked into killing people he doesn’t want to!). Obviously, it lacks the elegance of Shakespeare, but it is one of the classier pictures Corman ever helmed.” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

“The low budget is all too apparent, and despite a transfusion of graphic violence and ghostly apparitions, Corman hits the mark only occasionally.” Gene Wright, Horrorshows: The A – Z of Horror in Film, TV, Radio and Theater

Plot teaser:

The Old West, circa 1880. In an unnamed town, young girls are dying of a mysterious wasting disease. Dr John Carter (John Hoyt) and his daughter Dolores (Kathleen Crowley) have been tending to patients for hours on end, but lost one patient an hour ago. Another patient, Cora (Nancy Kilgas), looks like she will pull through after Preacher Dan Young’s (Eric Fleming) nightlong vigil; he and the Carters are offered breakfast and coffee by Cora’s parents (Alan Reynolds, Amzie Strickland). In the kitchen, however, they hear Cora scream – by the time they get to her room, she is sprawled dead on her bed, her window open. As he kneels to pray, Dan notices two small, bloody holes in Cora’s throat…

Returning to his ranch along with Dolores, Doc Carter finds his son Tim (Jimmy Murphy) extremely upset after the actions of their neighbor Buffer, who has been doing everything possible to get his hands on the Carter property, including damming a stream on the Carter ranch and having his men assault anyone who complains. To restrain his hot-headed son, the Doc drives back into town to have a word with the local sheriff (Edward Binns). The Sheriff’s discussion with Buffer (Bruce Gordon) in the local saloon proves less than successful, however, and a black-clad stranger (Michael Pate) follows Doc Carter’s buckboard. By the time he gets home, the Doc is dead, his throat bloody…

” … an old-school Gothic horror film with a Western setting, made in a year more commonly associated with rampaging aliens, insane scientists, and radioactive dinosaurs. what we do in the shadows vampire sex

What We Do in the Shadows is a 2014 New Zealand horror comedy film about a group of vampires who live together in Wellington, New Zealand. It was directed and written by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who also star in the film. The remainder of the cast are: Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stu Rutherford, Jackie Van Beek, Ben Fransham.

What We Do in the Shadows is based on a 2006 short film of the same name by Waititi and Clement. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014.

Official synopsis:

Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) – three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts…

what-we-do-in-the-shadows-trio

Reviews:

“takes pleasure in poking fun at various aspects of vampire lore, but not surprisingly (given the filmmakers), What We Do in the Shadows is more deadpan, clever, and silly than it is simple, “schticky,” or mean-spirited. And while Shadows is most assuredly a full-fledged comedy in horror clothing, fans of the darker genre will certainly enjoy how colorfully gory the movie gets during some of the best visual gags.” Scott Weinberg, FEARnet

“Some genre fans who prefer the silly to the satiric may bite, but the anemic pic isn’t remotely weird or witty enough for cult immortality. Feeling eternal at 87 minutes, the film introduces a rival gang of G-rated werewolves (“We’re werewolves, not swearwolves!”) and drags its way to the Unholy Masquerade Ball, populated by hard-partying vampires as well as zombies — the movie’s final act of desperation.” Rob Nelson, Variety

what-we-do-in-the-shadows-sundance-4

“It’s also as silly as it is smart, unloading plenty of easy gross-out gags involving gushing blood and projectile vomiting plus some token childish moments — a character audibly masturbating from inside his coffin, for example — and some the movie gets away with by having its characters act immaturely in spite of their ages ranging in the hundreds to thousands of years … There’s always a smart bit within seconds of something stupid.” Christopher Campbell, Film School Rejects

“If there is any justice, What We Do in the Shadows, will break out into the light of day as a crossover hit. This film is absolutely hysterical, came as a complete surprise to me, and even breathes life back into the withering corpse of the doc-comedy style of The Office.” Ed Travis, Cinapse
