Plot:

Half-brothers Caesar and Otto live out some of horror’s most terrifying scenes when they agree to house-sit a home filled with ghostly visions, levitating objects and possessions…

Reviews:

“While Paranormal Halloween is yet another funny and clever look at the wacky brothers that happen to walk into a horrific situation time and time again, Campfield also provides a biting satire on Hollywood, and the ongoing struggle of the horror filmmaker to keep up with trends and gain some success out of an ever fickle audience.” Felix Vasquez, Cinema Crazed

“Goofball parody humour isn’t everyone’s thing, but at the very least there’s some heart and thought behind much of the gags. I did have a problem with the use of unnecessary characters and scenes, all of which could’ve easily been left on the cutting-room floor, as they interrupted the pacing.” Pat Torfe, Bloody Disgusting

paranormal-halloween-brinke-stevens

” …this isn’t some lame sub-Scary Movie comedy that thinks just referencing something makes it a joke. Dave crafts funny gags out of this intertextuality and self-referentiality, weaving it into the character-based farce that is the brothers’ lives.” MJ Simpson, Cult films and the people who make them

Reviews:

“While the effects aren’t as terrible as the usual Syfy CGI, the are certainly cheesy enough to laugh at. That’s the point though. This isn’t a movie that was made to be serious. This was made to be fun and it really is a success on that factor. It’s one of those rare B-movies that is just as enjoyable without a group of drunk friends making fun of it.” Dead Derrick’s Horror Movie Reviews

“Unrealistic endings are commonplace in films, but the plan which eventually brings down the spiders is perhaps the most ridiculous in the history of motion pictures … Arachnoquake has its problems, but if you’re searching for the worst film ever you won’t find it here. You might even enjoy it, so it back and prepare for 86 minutes of jumping, fire-breathing mayhem.” Alex Morrison, That Film Guy

Arachnoquake - 2012

“It’s broad, dumb, obvious, and (almost) entirely predictable. It’s nothing more than yet another Saturday night cable TV time-filler, and it’s quite possibly the silliest movie you’ll see all month — and yet, if you’re a monster movie enthusiast (and I’m guessing you are), you may just find a few stray threads of relative amusement here.” FearNet

“In the wake of Speed and The Faculty, there are few bus-based action possibilities that have not been explored, and Arachnoquake doesn’t even try. Things perk up briefly during a doomed attempt to defend a supermarket with bug spray, and there’s an entertaining water-based chase, but little else to get excited about.” Jennie Kermode, Eye for Film

Honeymoon is a 2014 American science fiction horror film directed by Leigh Janiak (her feature film debut) from a screenplay co-written with Phil Graziadei.

It stars Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway as a newly-married couple whose honeymoon ends up being ruined by a series of strange events.

The movie had its world premiere on March 7, 2014 at South by Southwest. It should not be confused with the 2015 Mexican horror thriller Honeymoon, directed by Diego Cohen.

Opening plot:

Bea (Rose Leslie) and Paul (Harry Treadaway) are newly married and off to have a romantic honeymoon in a rustic cabin set in a secluded forest.

honeymoon-2014-sci-fi-horror-movie-rose-leslie-harry-treadaway

During their stay there, they go to a small restaurant where Will, the owner, initially acts hostile and asks them to leave, but later calms down, realizing he was Bea’s childhood friend. Will’s wife then comes in, acting strangely and saying they need to get away.

Afterwards, everything goes normally until their wedded bliss is cut short when Bea goes missing. Paul finds her naked and disoriented in the woods with no evidence as to how she got there or why she was there in the first place. He takes her back to the cabin, where she claims she was sleepwalking due to stress, and tells him to make nothing of it.

As time passes, Bea’s behavior becomes increasingly distant and strange. At first, Paul blames Bea’s strange behaviour on some encounter with Will, but soon he realizes there’s more going on…

Reviews:

“Janiak demonstrates some wonderfully confident direction for a first-timer, utilizing space, sound design and two very good lead actors as her tools to slowly amplify the tension and mess with your head. The situations she present before the discovery of Bea in the woods and after ring true and Paul’s reactions are justified, making it all the easier for the us to be affected by the grotesqueries that await in the latter half of the film.” Ryan Turek, ComingSoon.net

“The story comes first and foremost, and it’s the story that empowers the scares, not special effects, an escalating score or the boogeyman popping into frame from nowhere. To be succinct, Honeymoon is a beautifully crafted mystery that culminates in an unforgiving but not offensive finale.” Matt Molgaard, Horrorfreak News

honeymoon-2014-1

“Janiak does an admirable job of keeping the audience off guard without letting things feel manipulated. She is obviously a student of horror, but uses this to know what not to do, just as much as what works. But don’t be scared away by thinking this is a kind of movie like Cabin in the Woods that riffs on the tropes of the horror genre. Honeymoon is very much its own beast; a good story, excellently told, and very, very scary.” Ryland Aldrich, Screen Anarchy

Matinee is a 1993 comedy film directed by Joe Dante (Burying the ExTrapped Ashes; Gremlins; The Howling; Piranha) from a screenplay by Jerico Stone (My Stepmother Is an Alien) and Charlie Haas (Gremlins 2: The New Batch; Martians Go Home), the latter also portraying a schoolteacher.

The film is an ensemble piece about a William Castle (13 Ghosts; The Tingler; Mr. Sardonicus)-type independent filmmaker, with the home front in the Cuban Missile Crisis as a backdrop.

Joe Dante has said that the financing of the movie was difficult:

Matinee got made through a fluke. The company that was paying for us went out of business and didn’t have any money. Universal, which was the distributor, had put in a little money, and we went to them and begged them to buy into the whole movie, and to their everlasting sorrow they went ahead and did it. [Laughs.]” (the film took $9,532,895 at the box office in the United States)

A then-unknown Naomi Watts (Shut In; King Kong; The Ring) has a small role as a character in film within the film, The Shook-Up Shopping Cart.

Opening plot:

In Key West, Florida in October 1962, boys Gene Loomis (Fenton) and his brother Dennis (Lee) live on a military base (N.A.S. Key West); their father is away on a nearby submarine.

Reviews:

“Joe Dante has always been a clever, witty and subversive film-maker, and Matinee is one of the best of his films to display these talents. His love for the cinema of the period means that Mant!, our film-within-a-film is spot-on for a 1950s monster movie…” John Llewellyn Probert, House of Mortal Cinema

“There are a lot of big laughs in Matinee, and not many moments when I didn’t have a wide smile on my face” Roger Ebert

image-w1280

“The scenes from “Mant”, shot in black and white, that Dante and Haas have cooked up are some of the best movie satires on film. It’s not easy to parody a genre that’s already close to self-parody but the filmmakers triumph again and again. Actors such as Kevin McCarthy turn up in cameos for that all important deja-vu effect, and the special-effects are imperially tacky.” Peter Rainer, Los Angeles Times

matinee54

Matinee, which devotes a lot of energy to the minor artifacts of American pop culture circa 1962, is funny and ingenious up to a point. Eventually, it becomes much too cluttered, with an oversupply of minor characters and a labored bomb-and-horror-film parallel that necessitates bringing down the movie house…” Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“The charm of Matinee, a witty and affectionate homage to the sci-fi trash of yesteryear, is that director Joe Dante (Gremlins) appreciates both the tackiness and the awe.” Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

matinee-2

“At the same time that Dante has a field day brutally satirizing our desire to scare ourselves and others, he also re-creates early-60s clichés with a relish and a feeling for detail that come very close to love.” Jonathan Rosenbaum

matinee_1993_3-1455060526-726x388

“Dante’s movie is a romp, no doubt, but its nostalgia is a heartier variety than what we usually get, and it leaves us with an undercurrent of uneasiness that is unusual for a genre most often content enough to look back through amber. Woolsey’s words resonate for every youngster who has searched for reasons to explain their attraction to the scary side of cinema and memories of the places where those images were first encountered, but in Matinee there’s another terror with which to contend, one not so easily held at bay.” Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule

Macabre is a 1958 American horror mystery thriller film produced and directed by William Castle (Strait-Jacket; Mr. Sardonicus; House on Haunted Hill) from a screenplay by Robb White (Homicidal; 13 Ghosts; The Tingler) based on the novel The Marble Forest by Theo Durrant, a pseudonym for the group of twelve authors who each contributed one chapter.

Macabre involved one of Castle’s first forays into using the promotional gimmicks that later made him famous. For the US Allied Artists release, a certificate for a $1,000 life insurance policy from Lloyd’s of London was given to each customer in case he/she should die of fright during the film.

Reviews:

Macabre is a film that kind of falls in the middle-ground between corn and truly Tingler-summoning thriller. It walks the line between the two ends of the spectrum, teetering slightly closer to the “thrills” side than to the pool of queso dip. That being said, it’s a consistently entertaining film.” Lindsey D., The Motion Pictures

“This is gloomy, serious stuff following shady and mostly unsympathetic characters around dreary locations like funeral parlors, dark forests and a foggy, rainy cemetery, where our protagonists climb in and out of graves and explore tombs. There’s an expressive noir-ish/shadowy feel to Carl E. Guthrie’s cinematography and a sparse score from Les Baxter.” Bloody Pit of Horror

macabre-8

“The closing credits beg viewers not to give away the surprise ending, which certainly does come as a shock, but the lead-in to that conclusion mostly falls flat, with Barrett and Polly wandering around town and poking half-heartedly at various sites where the missing child might be interred. and their efforts lack any sense of urgency.” Jennifer Garlen, Virtual Virago

” … the atmosphere is considerably thinned by a series of flashbacks laboriously explaining why various other members of the cast have been hating the doctor, followed by a crude doubletake (borrowed from H.G. Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques, 1955)…” The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Horror

“One or two moments aside, this is a dull, confusing affair with a lack of any real structure to guide viewers smoothly through the bumpier narrative moments. Potentially good ideas are squandered in rambling conversations, the acting is pretty poor, and it’s pretty impossible to care about even one of the main characters.” Kevin Matthews, Letterboxd

Forsaken is a terrible movie with no redeeming qualities. No unintentionally funny scenes, no memorable scenes, no good performances. Painfully boring, terribly acted, poorly written. Avoid at all costs.” Kuba Grzeca, HorrorNews.net

‘Before you are buried… be sure you are really dead!’

Mortuary is a 1981 American slasher horror directed by Howard Avedis (They’re Playing with Fire; The Fifth Floor) from a screenplay co-written with his wife Marlene Schmidt (who co-produced and appears in a small role). The other co-producer was Edward L. Montoro (The Dark; Day of the Animals; Grizzly).

The film features a hooded face-painted killer who stabs or impales his victims with/on an embalming trocar. It was released theatrically on September 9, 1983 and took $4.3 million. It was also released internationally as Embalmed and Hall of Death.

mortuary1

Cinematographer Gary Graver worked for Al Adamson and Fred Olen Ray and also on many genre movies such as Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973), The Toolbox Murders (1978) and The Attic (1980). He directed Moon in Scorpio (1987).

Composer John Cacavas also contributed scores for Horror Express (1972) and The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973) as well as the theme for TV cop series Kojak.

It should not be confused with the 2005 film Mortuary, directed by Tobe Hooper.

Main cast:

Mary Beth McDonough, David Wysocki [as David Wallace], Bill Paxton (The Vagrant; Aliens; Near Dark), Lynda Day George (Pieces; Ants!Day of the Animals), and Christopher George (Pieces; City of the Living Dead; Graduation Day).

Horror icon Michael Berryman appears in footage shot for the misleading US trailer as a gravedigger but is not the film itself.

Plot:

Christie Parson (Mary McDonaugh) is mourning the death of her father (Danny Rogers) by drowning. Her mother has convinced herself it was a tragic accident, but Christie is sure it was murder.

mortuary3big

Christie suffers from nightmares in which a hooded figure, clutching an embalming trocar, pursues her. She turns detective, aided by her boyfriend (David Wallace) to find out the truth. Her sleuthing draws her to a local mortuary, whose owner, Hank Andrews (Christopher George), together with his secretly demented offspring, Paul (Bill Paxton), is guarding an odious secret…

screen-shot-2016-12-30-at-17-22-56Reviews:

“While nothing special, Mortuary basically gets the slasher job done with a minor mystery, chase scenes, a little nudity, some violent / gruesome moments and a twist ending. The cast is pretty appealing and the acting is a notch above average.” The Bloody Pit of Horror

“Fairly decent slasher flick with several jolts of suspense and gruesome deaths. Not a lot of blood and gore, but plenty of breasts both living and cadaver to enjoy. Fans of early 80’s slasher flicks should give this one a try.” Melon Farmers

“If you’ve got an 80s fetish, you’ll find more things between the feathered hair and the roller skating rinks, and the film looks and sounds very much like any other early 80s slasher movie, right down to the cornball dialogue and one hell of a nonsensical final shot. Unfortunately, it’s just not a very good one, save for the killer’s getup, the climax, the cleavage, and Mary McDonough’s body double.” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

“It’s actually a fairly slow-moving slasher film and neither Greg nor Christie are particularly interesting or likable. Still, the film features Bill Paxton skipping in a cemetery and that’s worth something.” Lisa Marie Bowman, Through the Shattered Lens

mortuary-1981-bill-paxton

Mortuary is an amusing movie with a lot going for it. It slows down about halfway in and leaves a few loose ends, but the good heavily outweighs the bad in this fun flick. I would recommend watching this if nothing else for the great acting of Christopher George and Bill Paxton.” Geno McGahee, Scared Stiff Reviews

“Bill Paxton is the best character in this …the lack of a decent story in Mortuary fails to hold viewer interest. Not as bad as it could be, but not recommended either.” Jim Harper, Legacy of Blood: A Comprehensive Guide to Slasher Movies

‘The transplant was a success. Then the donor came to take it back.’

Body Parts is a 1991 American horror thriller film directed by Eric Red (scripter of The Hitcher; Near Dark; director of 100 Feet and Bad Moon) from a screenplay co-written with Norman Snider (Dead Ringers). It was adapted from a 1965 novel, Choice Cuts, by French authors Thomas Narcejac and Pierre Boileau. The Paramount film was produced by Frank Mancuso Jr. (sequels to Friday the 13th; Species films).

screen-shot-2017-01-02-at-12-55-28Main cast:

Jeff Fahey (Atomic SharkBeneath; Psycho III), Lindsay Duncan (Frankenstein, 2007), Kim Delaney (Nightmares & Dreamscapes; The Devil’s Child; Hunter’s Blood) Brad Dourif (Chucky series; Malignant; Spontaneous Combustion) and Zakes Mokae (Vampire in Brooklyn); Dust DevilThe Serpent and the Rainbow).

Opening plot:

Bill Chrushank (Jeff Fahey) is a psychologist working with convicted killers at a prison in addition to teaching classes at a university. Ray, a convict who murdered his cellmate recently, tells Bill he can’t do anything to “fix” him. At home, Bill wonders to his wife (Kim Delaney) if this is true.

The next day, while driving to work, Bill gets in a horrific car accident where he loses his arm. At the hospital, Dr. Agatha Webb (Lindsay Duncan) convinces Bill’s wife to sign off on an experimental transplant surgery to give him a new arm from a donor they have waiting. Heavily drugged, Bill is wheeled into the operating room where he groggily notes several armed cops in hospital scrubs. The cops leave as soon as Dr. Webb removes the unknown donor’s head from his body at a nearby operating table. Bill awakens from the surgery and struggles to rehabilitate his new arm, which is covered in gruesome scars.

After some initial awkwardness between his wife with the new arm, he pleasures her with it and they make love. Just when it seems things are back to normal, Bill starts seeing flashes of horrible acts of murder (as if he is committing them). Next, he loses control of his new arm and cuts his face while shaving…

Reviews:

“From the eerie, overly dramatic score to the beautifully executed over-the-top action sequences to the gruesome gore, Body Parts is a horror film that never lets its ambition get in the way of enjoyment, leaving you with a film that’s pure entertainment and thrills. Sure, there are subtle themes about inherent evil and more than a few Frankenstein references, but in the end, this is a film that presents a beautifully executed high-concept.” Peter Shirey, JoBlo

“What could have been a reasonably interesting thriller literally goes to pieces in last third, until the brain seems the most salient part missing … the narrative hurriedly kicks into a slasher mode, replete with car chases, dismemberment and unintentional, if rather vulgar, hilarity.” Variety

“The direction has an edgy authority, and there’s one terrifying scene where the psychologist, who gets himself fingerprinted in order to discover where his limb originated, stares in horror as the police rap sheet prints out a nauseating litany of murders. But the movie is too cold and clammy and humorless.” Peter Rainer, Los Angeles Times

“Eric Red honours the story’s heritage while updating it and adding all the ingredients befitting a horror or an action movie of the time …The only misstep is an absolutely ridiculous car chase where two people are handcuffed together while sitting in different cars!” Mark Hodgson, Black Hole Reviews

“Director Eric Red, screenwriter of The Hitcher, gives a grungy new spin to a familiar genre theme in this tacky but vigorous mad doctor movie.” Time Out London

” …one helluva thriller … Give an arm and leg to see this one.” John Stanley, Creature Features

Reviews:

“The Ramsay films had a touch of original during the early 70s and 80s, but unfortunately they didn’t give out a single cult-hit in the 90s that could hold a candle to their amazing creations. This is a sleazy film with the swarm of B-graders or so called Bollywood backbenchers, which has nothing new to promise. If you’ve already seen Craven’s Shocker, better avoid this one.” Khayaal E. ‘Be careful… she might just take your heart.’

May is a 2002 American psychological horror film written and directed by Lucky McKee (All Cheerleaders Die; The Woman; The Woods), marking his directorial debut.

The film follows a lonely young woman (Bettis) traumatized by a difficult childhood, and her increasingly desperate attempts to connect with the people around her. It stars Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, and James Duval.

Plot:

May Dove Canady is an awkward, lonely young woman, who suffered from a terrible childhood due to her lazy eye. She has very few social interactions, her only “true friend” being a glass-encased doll named Suzie made by her mother and given to May for her birthday with the adage “If you can’t find a friend, make one.”

may_2

May works at a veterinary hospital, assisting with surgeries. Her optometrist fixes May’s lazy eye, first with glasses, then with contact lens. May becomes friends with Adam, a local mechanic. She has a fixation on his hands, which she considers to be the most attractive part of him, and they start dating. Meanwhile, May’s lesbian colleague Polly begins to flirt with her.

May invites Adam to her apartment and he shows her a film he made for his university titled Jack and Jill. The film reveals a story of two young lovers who go on a picnic and end up eating each other. May becomes aroused by the cannibalism in the film. During an intense make-out session, she bites Adam on the lip and it bleeds. Disturbed by her strange behavior, Adam abruptly leaves…

Reviews:

“It follows the traditional outlines of a horror or slasher film, up to a point–and then it fearlessly follows its character into full madness. We expect some kind of a U-turn or cop-out, but no; the writer and director, Lucky McKee, never turns back from his story’s implacable logic. This is his solo directing debut, and it’s kind of amazing. You get the feeling he’s the real thing.” RogerEbert.com

“ …May is a tragic and gut wrenching look at a girl who would do anything to become the ideal person for the people in her life, and eventually unwound from the aftermath of imperfection and idealistic visions of our loved ones.” – Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed

angela-bettis-may

“More successful when the title character finally embarks on her bloody mission than in the dawdling buildup … Mustering some psychological nuance through its comments on loneliness and rejection, this section is more entertaining than the slow setup, which too often presumes to be smarter and funnier than it actually is.” David Rooney, Variety

“The plotting itself manages to sidestep the usual slasher tropes as it slowly and inexorably unravels, all leading up to a quietly haunting conclusion that is as heart-wrenching as it is unnerving. If you haven’t seen it yet, give this one a try.” Bloody Disgusting

may-lucky-mckee-10577921htehx

“With each rejection, the audience becomes more complicit in her craziness as May kills and dismembers people in an attempt to achieve the impossible: finding someone to have and to hold. Mad props to director Lucky McKee for creating a character so relatable that we want nothing more than for her to succeed.” Jovanka Vuckovic, Rolling Stone

“Whip-smart and bugnuts, May delivers grisly goods, too, with a terrifying mishap at a kids’ rec room and a scene of blood caked so thick and far up May’s arms that it resembles evening gloves. There’s nothing silly in May’s chilling final image. Like The Descent, it’s the ultimate abandonment of tough reality for the simple solace of madness.” Nick Rogers, The Film Yap

Reviews:

“After a rocky start, The Shrine finds its footing and delivers a tense, exciting, wacky conclusion. The final twist is satisfying and does not feel forced in any way. The film is more enjoyable than expected, but could have used a more focused and entertaining beginning. The shrine itself is creepy as hell and the final act is full on madness and possessed mayhem.” Doc Rotten, HorrorNews.net

2456202-shrinestatue

“Its hard to throw punches at a film that’s so effortlessly entertaining, despite its inherent flaws and weaknesses. In many ways its these perceived weaknesses that actually elevate it to a higher status. The overacting, the ‘too bright’ colours, the head-scratching plot holes, (build a f*cking fence!!) and the cheesy costume designs all add to its charm.” The Horror Hotel

“Everything that is wrong here – the dull stock characters, the derivative plotting, Polish folk obviously played by non-Poles and Polish settings obviously not shot in Poland – could have been elevated by some sharp parodic writing and self-aware wit, as if to show that the filmmaker was in on the joke of how well-worn his material is. Instead we get a po-faced, poor imitation of a standard straight-to-video horror flick.” Anton Bitel, Eye for Film

the-shrine-movie-3

“There’s a pretty solid crucifixion-style scene, some decent looking rubbery monsters, some solid in-camera no frills jump-scares, and some flat out brutality that redeems this little number by the end of its running time.” Frank Cotton, Horribly Hooched

“Even with its familiar trappings and some occasional bumps in the road, The Shrine is an enjoyable little throwback.” Scott Weinberg, FEAR.net

‘Our greatest threat is our only hope’

The Girl with All the Gifts is a 2016 British post-apocalyptic zombie horror drama film directed by Colm McCarthy (Doctor Who; Ripper Street) from a screenplay by M.R. Carey, adapted from his novel of the same name. It stars Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine (The World’s End; Hot Fuzz), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction) and Sennia Nanua.

The plot depicts a dystopian future following a breakdown of society after most of humanity is wiped out by a fungal infection and focuses upon the struggle of a scientist, a teacher and two soldiers who embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie…

maxresdefault

Half of the film’s £4 million budget came from the BFI Film Fund and Creative England, making it the biggest investment that the latter had ever made and one of the largest ever for the BFI.

Warner Bros. bought the United Kingdom distribution rights, while the film is being distributed in the United States by Saban Films. It is released January 26, 2017 via DirecTV and on VOD on February 24, 2017.

Reviews:

The Girl with All the Gifts is clearly influenced by the genre greats such as 28 Days Later, crafted with just a small budget and some grounded CG work, it manages to pull off a tense experience that once again puts British crafted undead movies on the map, and even create a future star with a breakout performance from Sennia Nanua.” David Robinson, Crash Landed

“The movie is a coming-of-age story, but whose age is coming? That’s the profound question we’re left with, in a stellar adaptation that balances gore with black humor, ethical quandary, hope and—yes—plenty of brains.” Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

the-girl-with-all-the-gifts-class

“The best zombie-ish apocalypse in years. Sennia Nanua is a major discovery, but it’s the dense social commentary and moral dilemmas that will haunt you.” Helen O’hara, Empire

The Girl With All the Gifts manages to deliver everything you could possibly want from a zombie movie: Tons of scares, memorable characters, creative variations of the genre’s classic tropes, and serious subtext about what it means to be alive.” Matt Singer, ScreenCrush

sennia-nanua-as-the-girl-with-all-the-gifts

“What really separates The Girl with All the Gifts from the genre pack, however, is its moral intelligence, clever thematic consistency (drawing on the Greek myth of Pandora’s box) and emotional heft, the latter component rooted in the truly captivating breakout performance of young Nanua…” Charles Gant, Screen Daily

“The only one going all out is Close, whose character is a mad scientist, loquacious exposition dispenser and all-round explainer and generally a will-stop-at-nothing crazy woman. At the frustratingly vague end of the film, you realize that the zombie movie she signed up for in her head was a lot pulpier and more fun than the one she actually ended up playing in.” Boyd van Hoeij, The Hollywood Reporter

glenn-close-and-sennia-nanua-in-the-girl-with-all-the-gifts

“Ultimately, our monster child’s coming-of-age holds more interest than slamming together science-fiction babble with the drone of more gunfire. At least the ending teases something akin to that of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, as well as a wholly better film: one where conflict has manifested into something wholly different than another fight for the future.” Ethan Vestby, The Film Stage

“Chilean composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s pounding soundtrack creates a constant sense of uneasiness, while the film’s vibrant imagery pairs immersive master shots of the empty landscapes with telling closeups that hint at divided allegiances. In the spectacular finale, the movie takes on the haunting, expressionistic dread of a Bosch painting.” Eric Kohn, IndieWire

Reviews:

“It is of course a slow burn, as we must witness the decline of Meridith’s mind and her (cliché term) descent into madness, but I felt like some of the sequences could have been tightened … The film’s oppressive mood and the painful situations the audience must endure while screening The Id; are nothing compared to the work of Amanda Wyss in the lead role.” Michael Klug, HorrorFreak News

” …there is an over-reliance on flashbacks and fugue-state fantasy sequences that are fine to begin with but become repetitive over time. Luckily, the movie is not overly long, and its lively editing style quickens the pace to the point of a gallop as the bloody climax comes to a close. The Id is a thought-provoking psychological chiller that’s well worth a look.” Staci Layne Wilson, Dread Central

theid_still_drag

“Along with the storyline, the acting was phenomenal by everyone. Patrick Peduto’s character as Meredith’s father was incredible and ruthless. You were supposed to hate him and you did. Amanda Wyss, hands down, was the perfect pick for the starring role. She gave a brilliant performance as Meredith, one worthy of an Oscar. Her acting is raw, vulnerable, and captivating as you can feel every emotion she is going through.” Tori Danielle, PopHorror

“The opening creepily sets the tone for the movie, as Meridith muses that she believes her father loved her, but “I also believe that if you love something truly, if you love something completely, you can’t help but destroy it.” Overall, I was impressed (and depressed). The more I think about it, the more fascinating the symbolism becomes. Give it a look if you’re in the mood for something thoughtful and haunting.” Lois Kennedy, Addicted to Horror Movies

theid_still_27

“When you’re watching The Id – and you really should – then you will definitely be uncomfortable. And you will want to look away. Just like Meridith would prefer to look away from everything. Unfortunately, after years of abuse by her father, his words are constantly in her head. Even when he’s sleeping or nowhere near her, she can imagine what he would say to her.” Scream Queen, Heaven of Horror
